Mediating Online Course

Course Content
This one-day workshop has been designed for ADR practitioner or trainee mediators who wish to extend their practice with skills to mediate online. The course will take place on Zoom although details will also be provided regarding how to mediate on Microsoft Teams. This workshop presents a good opportunity for practicing mediators to collect continuing professional development credits. The size of the group for this workshop will be limited. Our next workshop will be held online on 17 March 2021.
Overall objective
The one-day mediation online course is to show you how virtual mediation works in practice, and how it can be successfully applied to an interpersonal dispute.

This mediation online course will be facilitated by Savath Meas, Mediator and ADR Specialist of the Cambodian Centre and Mediation, and Abe Quadan, Director of Options Mediation Service.

- Compare and contrast using online mediation skills with other forms of dispute resolution;
- Understand the essential skills and qualities of an effective online mediator;
- Know the steps and stages of the online mediation model;
- Know when and how virtual mediation would be the best remedy for a dispute, and
- Appreciate how it feels to be in the online mediator role.
Outline of the Training Course:
- How conflict develops and at what stage you should consider using online mediation;
- Setting yourself up to mediate online and guide to online mediation for mediators;
- Arranging the mediation - a suitably adapted agreement to mediate and the importance of confidentiality, and guide to online mediation for parties and representatives;
- What sorts of situations should be mediated and preparation meetings with the parties and their representatives prior to the mediation day;
- Welcoming the parties on the day of the mediation - waiting rooms, and preliminary private meetings in breakout rooms;
- How online mediation differs from other approaches to resolving conflict;
- What happens at each stage of the virtual mediation process;
- Key mediator skills at each stage and how a typical online case proceeds in practice;
What it is like to be in the mediator's shoes: mediating part of a case example; - Sharing documents during the mediation and supervising the drafting of the Settlement Agreement;
- Troubleshooting - building rapport, managing emotion, losing connectivity, and hybrid models of online and face-to-face.
