Basic Mediation for Professionals
1. INTRODUCTION
In 2019, Cambodian Centre for Mediation (CCM) began running nationally certified mediation training programs (MTP) providing professional qualifications for a career in the mediation profession. CCM established the Mediation House “MH” of the mediation services and trained civil society groups, within the private sector, lawyers, as well as retired judges and civil servants to become professional mediators who can provide quality mediation services to the civil society and business community in Cambodia.
2. GOAL
The goal is to establish highly skilled professional mediators in conflict resolution who will provide mediation service at the MH. The graduates of the training course will be highly skilled and qualified to provide a service that meets the needs of conflicting parties at all levels. CCM develops mediation Accreditation Standards to ensure that mediators are qualified and adhere to professional and ethical standards. CCM strives to be a leading agency in mediation training and as a service provider.
3. OBJECTIVES
To achieve this goal, CCM will implement the following objectives:
5. ELIGIBLE PARTICIPANTS
6. TRAINING METHODS
The training weaves together theory, observation, experiential exercises, and practice opportunities to create a meaningful learning experience. The participants are strongly encouraged to actively participate in field practice and continue learning and developing new skills and techniques of mediation practice. The participants have opportunities to practice the knowledge, skills and experience of mediation learned from the course as a practical mediator in dispute resolution. The participants will explore and evaluate their active knowledge and “theory” of the mediation process, their strengths, and weaknesses as practitioners, and develop ways to revitalize their commitment to mediation practice.
The MTP will be trained by ADR and Mediation Experts from CCM, Indonesia Dispute Board (IDB), and Asian International Dispute Resolution Association (AIDRA) who have practical intensive experiences in ADR and mediation practice at national and international levels. The program will study and practice mediation skills and techniques at MTP as well as fieldwork by doing mediation exercises and role-plays and participating in observation and co-mediation of real mediation cases at the Offices of the Legislation and Mediation at the government district level and/or MH. The trained participants in mediation will be certified as an accredited mediation certification by CCM and AIDRA after completing the requirements of CCM’s mediation standards.

The core mediation training program consists of 48 hours of basic mediation process and practice. The 48 hours of basic mediation for professionals is the prerequisite course for participants who pursue the advanced mediation techniques, specific training courses or certify and accredit mediators of CCM.
The participants are required to actively participate in all learning processes and different steps of practical work. The participants are expected to participate in exercise and practices of mediation sessions where they are monitored and evaluated by trainers during the training courses. The participants are requested to take part in exercises and role-plays of mediation practice where they take a role as the party and mediator of the mediation sessions.
