Advanced Mediation Training Course
1. Advance Mediation Techniques
Advanced Mediation Techniques, an interactive 2-day course, focuses both on the skills of the mediator and on the skills of parties and advocates in mediation. The advanced mediation training is designed for previously trained or experienced managers, human resource professionals, legal consultants, lawyers, and others desiring to enhance their mediation skills to advance skills of mediation practice and enhance the capacity of mediators in different situations. The advanced training is intended for mediators and conflict managers handling public, private and workplace disputes who want to improve their dispute resolution skills.
The advanced training includes mediation principles and ethics, mediation process, skills and techniques of mediation, and mediation practices in different situations. Areas of skill building include improving questioning techniques, analyzing and evaluating situations where the parties are at impasse, resolving deadlocks, and using alternate approaches for handling evaluative and distributive disputes. The trainers also will discuss how mediation skills can be employed to address workplace discord that predates the formal complaint/grievance process.
2. Course Objectives
The purpose of “Advanced Mediation” is to equip neutrals with advanced mediation and other ADR skills to take them beyond basic proficiency in mediation, conciliation, and neutral ADR settlement approach. It build on basic mediation training courses, this course focuses on the latter stages of the mediation process, emphasizing caucusing and closure. The graduates are coached and enriched with their skills in mediation processes and practices. Advanced issues such as complicated cases, impasse handling, and the roles of culture and gender in ADR processes are included.
In order to permit maximum feedback and learning, participants will spend most of the class time in small groups practicing advanced mediation techniques in disputes involving civil, commercial, and employment problems, as well as multi-party international, public policy, class actions, and environmental conflicts. Each participant will have the opportunity to mediate a complete dispute, with feedback.
The course involves participation in two-day (16 hours) training workshops followed by observation mediation cases and practice mediation experience on the field. Extensive role plays help participants develop in-depth skills. Basic mediation training is a prerequisite; mediation or another ADR experience is also recommended.
Participants will experience mediation practice through classroom simulations, observation and analysis of informal interest-based negotiations and mediation in their lives and case studies.

This training course is typically taught utilizing a range of teaching methods, including lecture, large and small group discussion, interactive exercises and coached role-playing. Participants will have at least two opportunities to play a mediator in coached role-playing under the supervision of an experienced mediator, who will provide feedback to support and facilitate learning.
